Spar staff apprehend ATM scammer

Conman caught in the act

Quick thinking Charlies SuperSpar staff and security this afternoon apprehended an ATM scammer preying on innocent shoppers in the store.

The man, who belongs to a gang believed to be from out of town, was in the store with an accomplice.

They tried to scam an elderly man at the ATM’s when a Spar employee became suspicious and approached them.

The men walked away from the ATM’s and fled when the elderly man told staff that he did not get his card back from the machine.

Staff raced after the duo who sprinted towards a White VW Polo in the parking lot.

The first conman got into the backseat and the other was entering the passenger side door when the driver pulled away.

He fell to the ground and was apprehended by staff members and Mbube security guards stationed outside.

The car appeared to race up Gladstone Street towards Victoria Street.
