Striking EPWP workers trash town

Sections of Victoria and Harding streets have been trashed with heaps of dirt and rubbish bins have been toppled onto the road, causing chaos for drivers on their way to work

Into the second day of the newly merged, Inkosi Langalibalele Municipality strike and plumes of black smoke bellowed into the air from burning tyres.

Sections of Victoria and Harding streets have been trashed with heaps of dirt and rubbish toppled onto the road, causing chaos for drivers on their way to work.  It has been alleged that the streets were trashed during the early parts of the morning.

The contents removed from the bins have left a nauseating smell hanging in the air. The scene of the strike is still surrounded by heavily armed police and security guards.

Most municipal services are currently disrupted by a strike, which erupted yesterday, (Thursday, September 8). Municipal employees have gathered in crowds around the municipal building in Victoria Street.

A bakkie load of tyres was delivered to the municipal building for the striking workers, which was met with songs of protest when police seized the tyres.

“Estcourt Visible Policing officers responded to strike action, it is alleged that about 150 employees are involved in the strike action. Police are monitoring the situation and are investigating a case of intimidation,” commented police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Basheer  Ahmed Khan.

No one has been arrested at this stage.
