Beware of hoax news sites

They rely on being protected when producing false stories by labelling the content as satire

In an age where the Internet is our main source of information, more and more sites have developed, punting news content.

Some, however, are blatantly hoax/fake news sites which mislead readers into thinking they are real and the news they publish is real news.

They label their news content as “news satire” or “news fauxtire”, but still attempt to imitate the format of a typical mainstream news site written by a credible journalist.

They rely on being protected when producing false stories by labelling the content as satire.

Readers need to always check the reliability of a site, check the source, scrutinize other content, trace the original source and most importantly, seek confirmation before spreading a false story.

This is obviously a hard ask for the average reader, which is why these fake news sites have become so popular in SA.

The sad truth is that unless you read the story on a credible news site in SA, chances are the story is fake. If no other news outlet is running a similar story, you can be almost 100% sure it is fake news.
