Breaking News: Drought at its worst in Ladysmith
uThukela will be forced to shut down water supply for more than 19 hours a day in order to try and rebuild storage

Due to the persistent drought situation experienced in Ladysmith, with not sufficient rains being received, the Klip River abstraction point is now completely dried up.
The Ladysmith area is now relying on one source of water supply, which is Spioenkop Dam. uThukela District Municipality say they have been barely surviving on the water schedules which were recently introduced to the community, whereby water was being released for only five hours a day.
Now, due to high water demand and usage in the Ladysmith area, uThukela will be forced to shut off the water supply for more than 19 hours a day in order to try and rebuild storage so that the community can at least have some water.
Please bear in mind that no water can be supplied if the usage does not decrease to an acceptable level.
The situation will negatively affect the following higher lying areas of town; Limit Hill, Model Kloof, Kloof Park, Observation Hill, Mkhamba Gardens, Hyde Park, Industrial Park, Shayamoya, Steadville, St Chad’s, Ladysmith CBD, Van Riebeeck Park, the golf course area and Roosboom.
“In the event of unforeseen circumstances, if water is not supplied, communities are urged to store enough water in containers, because we will not have the capacity to supply water using water tankers,” says uThukela spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza.
“We therefore also urge communities to help us save water so we can work together and share this scarce, precious resource with each other,” adds the spokesperson.
Consumers are further requested to fix water leaks at their premises and report all water leaks occurring outside their premises to the uThukela call centre on 086-010-4257.
“Consumers should bear with us as we try our utmost best to manage the situation,” conclude uThukela.
