Municipality holds garden launch
The site has already been fenced by the municipality and more support will be provided to the community co-operative

Alfred Duma Local Municipality, led by Cllr Kubheka from Ward 14, hosted a community garden launch on Thursday (January 12), specifically aimed at assisting the community of Burford.
The land that will be used for the community garden belongs to the Mthethwa family. Former Ward 14 councillor Mr Mthethwa officially handed over the project to the newly-elected councillor.
“This community garden previously existed and was occuypied by the ‘Vulamehlo’ co-operative, which is no longer in existence due to the fact that the majority of its members have passed on and those who are still alive are no longer fit to manage the garden due to their age,” said council.
The site which will be used for gardening had infrastructure such as pipes, fencing, generators and ploughing equipment, which was no longer available due to theft and misplacement.
During the launch, the garden was handed over to a newly-established community co-operative known as ‘Siginqa-itshe’, which is led by Mr Mlotshwa.
Cllr S Kubheka confirmed that the approximately 100 acres of land is available for community gardens, which ‘Siginqa-itshe’ plans to use as follows:
* Divide the 100 acre land into 20 smaller gardens
* Allocate 20 gardens to 20 different households
* Provide each family with the necessary gardening tools such as spades, forks and watering cans
* Teach families how to grow and maintain a vegetable garden
Council also delegated the Municipal Local Economic Development Section to provide support to the project. The site has already been fenced by the municipality and more support will be provided to the community co-operative.
