Isandlwana anniversary: King calls for social cohesion
Epic battle recreated under iconic Isandlwana hill

King Goodwill has called for social cohesion at the 138th commemoration today of the 1879 battle of Isandlwana – the scene of one of imperial Britain’s worst colonial defeats.
The King was in a conciliatory mood in a commemoration held under grey skies under the iconic hill.

He said the past should be set aside but there should be more recognition for the role traditional leaders played in the fight against colonialism.
His sentiments on reconciliation and cohesion were echoed by Dundee Diehard Renactment team’s Gavin Slater who said the re-enactment did not ‘glorify war but honoured the brave on both sides and was a way of showing the modern generation that the mistakes of the past should not be repeated’.
The commemoration was also attended by Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Health MEC Dr S Dhlomo, representing the Premier of KZN and officers from the SANDF and international and local tourists.
