Municipality hosts Mayoral Excellence Awards 2016
There were different categories of awards, including 'Top 5 Learner', 'Top Learner Per Subject' and 'Top School'
uThukela District Municipality, in conjunction with the KZN Department of Education, hosted the Mayoral Matric Excellence Awards yesterday (January 20) at the Town Hall.
This is an annually held event which serves to recognise and reward learners who excelled in their matric studies.
Learners, parents, principals and family members filled up the Town Hall, cheering as the recipients were called up onto the stage.
Learners from various schools – including LHS, Dr Joseph Shabalala Secondary School, Emhlwaneni High School, Estcourt High School and Amangwe High School – graced the stage as their names were read out.
Award categories included ‘Top 5 Learner’, ‘Top Learner Per Subject’ and ‘Top School’.
LHS won ‘Top Learner’ and Emhlwaneni ‘Top School’, while a student from Steadville High scooped ‘Top Learner Per Subject’ for his excellence in Physics.
District Mayor Mazibuko congratulated the awardees as he handed them their trophies, certificates and laptops.
“We are gathered here to celebrate the learners who achieved high marks in their matric studies. These learners have made us proud and have flown the uThukela District Municipality’s flag high. As the municipality, we want to celebrate these learners and thank them by awarding them for a job well done,” said Mayor Mazibuko.
The municipality also handed out bursaries to those deserving thereof.
