uThukela District Municipality awarded for exceptional performance

Out of 61 municipalities during the 2016/17 IDPs, uThukela District managed to secure position two for its efforts

KZN Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) hosted the Provincial Back2Basics (B2B) launch that was held at the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg on Friday.  The event was also used as a platform to honour and reward those municipalities that have performed well in various operational categories.

KZN MEC for CoGTA Ms Nomsa Dube-Ncube conferred uThukela District Municipality with a certificate and trophy in the Overall Best Provincial IDP category.

Out of 61 municipalities during the 2016/17 IDPs, uThukela District managed to secure position two for its efforts. This was the second time in a row that the municipality has been rewarded for performing exceptionally well in this category.

Elated District Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko took the stage to receive the awards, to much applause from the audience.
In her address, MEC Dube-Ncube reminded the municipalities that the B2B concept was based on serving the communities better. She said this intervention is about analysing the activities of municipalities. “We have met here during the fifth term of local government since its inception in 2000. We see a lot of progress in our municipalities, which includes financial management, service delivery, good governance and transparent administration,” said Ms Dube-Ncube.

The MEC encouraged all the municipalities to be consistent and strive to be the best all the time. She said the B2B programme challenges municipalities to get their basics right. “Every time we must inspire our communities with what we are doing. Our IDPs reflect the needs and aspirations of our communities.

As the newly-elected leadership of municipalities, we need to rise up to make sure we respond to the needs of the communities we serve,” the MEC added.

The B2B programme is basically about getting things right. It aims to make local government more accountable, effective and responsive to the needs of the communities. It was then emphasised that B2B should be a standing item in all council meetings. All mayors also signed a memorandum of understanding, pledging to commit themselves to implement the B2B programme in their respective municipalities.
