RICHVIEW – The Newcastle Municipality’s Ward Committee Inauguration took place at the Richview Civic Hall on January 26.
A total of 340 committee members, as well as ward councillors and municipal officials, were in attendance.
“The aim of this event is to encourage public participation, as it plays a crucial role when decisions are made in the municipality,” said Strategic Executive Director (SED) of Development Planning and Human Settlements, Nokuthula Thusi.

Cooperation among ward councillors and local government was emphasised, while the roles and duties of ward committee members were outlined, and expectations highlighted.
“We are governed by law to have functioning wards,” said Speaker Jabu Khumalo.
She said the responsibility of elected representatives was to provide feedback to ward councillors and respect protocol and authority.
“Each ward has its own challenges and needs, and they should be addressed accordingly. We cannot have a ‘blanket approach’.”
Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi concurred and appealed to ward councillors and committee members to ensure service delivery in communities.
“We are here to introduce the committee to local government. It should not be used as a platform to contest ideas.
We encourage committee members to be vigilant and work with councillors. We are lifelong learners. Humility will always earn respect,” he concluded.
