Newcastle Library extensions to be completed by the end of 2017
Bookworms can look forward to a larger study area and computer section, and an increased floor space in the main library.

Refurbishment of the Newcastle Library is well under way, and hopeful bibliophiles can look forward to a the new look and style.
In the interim, completion of phase 2 is dependent on additional funding.
“In order to commence with Phase 2, the project implementation plan needs to be reviewed. The two phases will run concurrently,” said Community Services Culture and Amenities Spokesperson of the municipality, Aletta Botes.
With available grant funding taken into consideration, the project was divided into two phases.
“A submission was made to the Provincial Department of Arts and Culture (DAC), for additional funding.”
The request was supported by the provincial department, and funding will be transferred by the DAC during the current municipal financial year 2016/2017.
Eight months into the renovations, library users are hanging on by a thread of hope that the much-deserved facelift will not drag on.
“We are working closely with the project managers to prevent the closure of the library to the community.”
Mrs Botes also advised that the upgrade will disrupt certain services.
“The affected services will include the study and computer areas,” she said.
In compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, all entrance and exit doors, as well as emergency exits, are being redesigned to accommodate disabled persons.
“The facility will be fully accessible to disabled people.”
Bookworms can look forward to a larger study area and computer section, and an increased floor space in the main library. This will allow for improved display and setting of shelves and library paraphernalia.
“Overall, the extensions will create a more user friendly environment for library users,” concluded Mrs Botes.
It is anticipated both phases will be completed towards the end of the year.
