RICHVIEW – The prestigious Grade 12 Excellence Awards ceremony was held at Richview Civic Hall on January 19. The event was attended by several dignitaries to reward the top 2016 matriculants on their excellent results.
In his address, District Mayor, Dr Musa Ngubane, commended the learners in the Amajuba District. However, he made a comment during his speech which was considered offensive.

“We should not let an Indian act…because when you let him act, he will excel and he will do everything possible to make sure they don’t have any other option…but to go on and take over.” A person in the audience took offense, saying it was racist.
When this comment was questioned afterwards, Deputy Director of Public Relations for Amajuba District Municipality, Sbonelo Cebekhulu immediately responded on behalf on Dr Ngubane. He said Dr Ngubane did say the words, but it was in good faith and in appreciation of the efforts of the Indian community when they were given any task.
He said the mayor was referring to the performance of the previous Newcastle Mayor, Afzul Rehman, during the period 2009 to 2010. He mentioned the excellent work he did and acknowledged that Indians excel whenever given the opportunity. He compared it to the results in the Amajuba District, and said once you get a position of superiority, you must excel, so no one can remove you from the position.
Dr Ngubane apologised to the complainant, if the said statement was not well received.
Mr Cebekhulu said the mayor had the highest regard for the Indian community and was extremely sensitive to race relations in the country. “His praise for the community should not be misconstrued into something negative.”
“The mayor had even, in the event in question, engaged community members who are Indians, for their support to show his appreciation and respect of their role in community development,” concluded Mr Cebekhulu.
