Poor workmanship by traffic technical staff was the cause of skew road markings on Sutherland Street, painted on Monday, January 23.
This meant the lines had to be repainted last Wednesday, and ratepayers will have to fork out R3 200 for the work.

Newcastle Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi, said he investigated the matter on Wednesday morning after the issue was brought to his attention on Monday.
“I can confirm it was indeed poor workmanship and have instructed that corrective measures be initiated,” he said.
Protection Services Chief Traffic Officer, Ashok Anandhaw, claimed while a supervisor did monitor the work, the site was visited at intervals.
“He is also engaged in other operational duties, which include the making of signs and addressing complaints of missing sign boards.”
Chief Anandhaw said the traffic technical staff responsible for the painting of the road markings, comprised of three people.
“They are responsible for the road markings in Newcastle, oSizweni, Madadeni and Charlestown.”
Despite their workload, he said this was no reason for painting the lines skew.
