Council forced to rebuild cattle kraal they demolished near Modelkloof, Ladysmith

Municipal workers were spotted this morning rebuilding the kraal

It appears that Alfred Duma Local Municipality may have jumped the gun when they recently demolished a cattle kraal that was built close to Modelkloof, near the pedestrian bridge that runs over the N11 (Newcastle road).

Council workers were spotted this morning (February 7) rebuilding the kraal.

After numerous complaints from both the communities of Model Kloof and Limit Hill, the cattle kraal was completely destroyed by council workers last month.

“Out of pressure from community members and the farmer taking a long time to remove the kraal, we took it into our hands to get the kraal removed,” explained Ward 22 Councillor Zakhele Mnyende.

It would appear that the decision to demolish the structures was premature and the correct legal processes were not followed.

It is believed that a court interdict against council may have been obtained.

Council workers now have to rebuild all the structures and then wait for the court to decide how the structures will be removed following regular legal channels.

We have asked for comment from the kraal owners and as soon as we have further information, we will update this story.
