Sewer water fills up yard in Poona Road, Ladysmith

Mrs Govender and her neighbours can't even keep their doors and windows open, as the foul stench enters their houses and attracts insects

The foul stench of sewer water has taken over a yard in Poona Road in the Leonardsville area, leaving the homeowners and nearby neighbours furious.

Aside from the terrible smell, homeowner Mrs Govender and her neighbours say the sewer water poses a health hazard.

“This terrible sewer water has been filling up my yard since last year November. We called a plumber to come have a look at the burst sewerage pipe and discovered that it was not an internal problem, but the municipality’s. I have tried to get the municipality to come and fix it, but nobody has ever shown up,” says Mrs Govender.

Residents can’t even keep their doors and windows open, as the stench enters their houses and attracts insects such as mosquitoes. “This is ridiculous and has been going on for a while now. The matter was reported to the municipality and a reference number was issued, but nobody has ever come to fix the burst pipe. The entire neighbourhood is complaining about the smell that has taken its toll in the Leonardsville area. The municipality seriously needs to do something, as we cannot live like this,” said IFP councillor Mrs L Bhoobun.

Mrs Govender, Mrs Bhoobun and the entire community of Leonardsville have issued a plea to the municipality to come and fix the pipe, as the problems are ongoing.
