The meaning of the Alfred Duma Municipality logo finally explained

Mr Alfred Duma was present during the launch, expressing a word of appreciation to the municipality, as the logo was changed in his honour

In honour of Alfred Duma, the municipality officially launched the new logo yesterday (February 9) at the Town Hall.

“Alfred Duma was awarded the order of Mendi for bravery in 2013 for his leadership in times of difficulty and liberation of the people of South Africa. Alfred Duma is one of those brave comrades who were born at a time when hope for liberation was non-existent,” said Alfred Duma Municipality Mayor Vincent Madlala.

” I would like to take thalfred-logois opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your approval that the name be changed to Alfred Duma Municipality, in honour of my struggle and dedication in fighting for liberation,” said the honoured Alfred Duma.

The municipality also issued the true meaning and what the logo stands for:

1. The stylised face of Alfred Duma was created to show his bold, brave character – the new face of the municipality inspired by his rich legacy.

2. The spear rises from his name, showing both courage and the leadership qualities he portrayed during the fight for the people of South Africa.

3. Alfred Duma Municipality’s name is set in a modern font style. It shows a sense of a simple but modern municipality.

4. The three rivers flowing across the logo show the mighty Tugela, the Klip River and the Indaka River flowing as one as they merge with the brother municipality of Indaka.

5. The bright sun rising from the hills shows the beautiful climate – beautiful weather for both work and play.

6. The mechanical gear rising up shows the municipality as a strong industrial hub, home to major industrial and agricultural companies.

7. The mountain ranges shown in a simple but meaningfull illustration symbolise pillars of strength – from the great Umbulwane and Gun hills to the neighbour’s Indaka Mhlumayo and the Ilenge Hills.

From 1964 to 1974, Duma was a political prisoner on Robben Island, where he learnt to deal with hardship through humour and never losing the focus of the fight against apartheid. Comrades know him for his humour that lightened up the mood in times of hopeless, dark situations. To keep a communication link with the outside world, Duma and other comrades sent letters through Nelson Mandela, who later became South Africa’s first democratically elected president.

At the time of going to press, municipal officials could not comment on exactly how much they had paid for the logo to be designed, or how much the entire new logo process will cost in the future.
