Devotees celebrate annual Kavady Festival

There are various reasons for carrying the Kavady, the main reason being to express thanks to Lord Muruga for help in overcoming a particular problem

The Shri Siva Soobramoniar Temple held their annual Kavady Festival today (February 12), followed by a procession through the streets.

The Kavady prayer is observed over a 10-day period, during which devotees have to abstain from alcohol and meat, among other things. They maintain a vegetarian diet for the entire period.

Kavady is a ceremonial sacrifice and offering practiced by devotees during the worship of Lord Muruga.

There are various reasons for carrying the Kavady (wooden structure decorated with flowers and carrying milk), but the main reason is to express thanks to Lord Muruga for help in overcoming a particular problem.

Devotees were seen  piercing various parts of their bodies with hooks and small lances called ‘vel’. This is done as a symbol of their faith.
