THE SEWAGE which was flowing in Lakeside last year has still been plaguing residents this year.
According to Mr L Mbhele, a resident in the area, nothing was ever done about the sewage pipe, which had burst around the end of October last year.
“We reported the issue to the municipality to absolutely no avail and the situation is even worse now as the sewage is going into people’s houses,” said Mr Mbhele.
According to the councillor of Ward 22, Cllr Lawrence Dube, the matter may be an ongoing one due to the fact that there is a sewer line around this part of Lakeside that residents are extending their houses on.
“These houses build pressure on the pipes they are built on, when they are extended, and as a result, the pipes eventually burst,” said Cllr Dube.
Cllr Dube blamed the situation on poor planning and went on to say that the matter would not have gone on so long had municipal workers been more vigilant and willing to respond quickly to community issues.
“The problem with our municipality is that everything is politicised and this has a major influence on service delivery,”said Cllr Dube.
Cllr Dube said that community members could rest easy though because municipal workers had started working on fixing the sewage problem on Monday.
