Update: Hundreds of homes left without water

uThukela spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza says they are waiting for an electrician from Newcastle to attend to the matter

Hundreds of homes’ taps have been dry since midday yesterday (February 13).

uThukela would like to inform the public that due to an electrical fault at the Ezakheni bulk plant on pump 2 and switchgear on the main panel, it is not possible to pump water with two pumps to Abattoir Hill and from there to Maidens Castle.

uThukela spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza was contacted this morning regarding the situation. He says they are waiting for an electrician from Newcastle to attend to the matter and expect water to be back by this afternoon.

Residents vented their anger on social media because no water tankers were sent out to the affected areas.

However, it was later learned that residents of Calendula Road and Balsam Avenue were called out of their homes after 11pm by uThukela workers operating water tankers. Shouts of “Come collect water” woke people from their slumber.

The following areas are affected by water interruptions: greater part of Acaciavale, parts of Steadville, White City, Tsakane and Umbulwane. Mkhonza added that water tankers have been dispatched to the affected areas.

uThukela apologises for any inconvenience caused.

Residents are urged to store water when it comes back on, as water interruption seems to be an ongoing problem.
