uThukela District Municipality held IDP 2017/2018 public consultation meetings over a three-day period from February 7 to 9 in all three local municipalities in the Emamfemfetheni, Ezakheni and Moyeni areas.
The purpose of these consultations was to do community needs analysis so that by the time the budget is prepared, it will then be informed by the needs identified by the communities for the five-year term of the new council.

uThukela Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko aimed to consult with the community to get their views in order to direct resources where they are most needed. At all three venues that were visited, attendance was ‘full house’ and people participated very well.
The mayor clarified and explained to the people that the core function of uThukela District Municipality is the provision of water and sanitation.
“Our task is thus to make sure all households in the district have the proper functioning water and sanitation infrastructure,” said the mayor. The mayor also pleaded with people to save water by all means necessary, as we are still facing a drought situation in spite of the rainfall received recently. He urged them to report all water leaks and burst pipes to the relevant authorities.
This was the first round of the IDP public consultation. During the months of April and May, uThukela District will be going out for another consultation with the draft IDP and budget for the 2017/18 financial year.
In so doing, uThukela District is trying to improve communication between the municipality and the community so that both parties clearly understand what is going on in terms of budget allocation and community needs.
