Grassing over the Fernwood grounds

Sportsmen have commended the good state of the pitch, and the overall opinion of the Fernwood grounds is positive.

FERNWOOD – The Fernwood grounds are superior to the Paradise grounds.

This comment was made by Ward 3 Councillor, Matthew Shunmugam, in relation to upgrades to the grounds over the course of last year.

Ablution and change room facilities have also been revamped.

“The grounds are used by the community, including joggers, soccer players and the cricket association. Organisations can approach us if they have a structured league.”

Sportsmen have commended the good state of the pitch, and the overall opinion of the Fernwood grounds is positive.

However, it’s not all hunky dory.

Local soccer representative, Mervyn Maharaj said the grass surrounding the pitch was overgrown, and the pitch itself was not marked.

Double-booking of the grounds was also common.

“Unfortunately when you go to play, there is no access to the change room,” he added. “If there’s no security guard they can at least give each association a set of keys.”

Although no security guard was present on the multiple visits to the grounds by the Advertiser, Cllr Shunmugam maintained the security guard was tasked with unlocking the change rooms.

He said this was procedure, to prevent vandalism and abuse of the facility.

Head of Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries, Vish Govender said the Fernwood grounds were treated as a high-priority area.

This is because the grounds are seeded with potential.

“Last year we had money for the indoor cricket stadium, but unfortunately that was removed due to budgetary constraints. Future plans will include fencing and the indoor cricket facility, which will be included in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP).”
