Weather update: Heavy rain has Public Safety on their toes, as river and streams risk flooding

Public Safety are keeping a close eye on the levels and should flooding occur, motorists will be diverted onto alternative routes

With pumps at the Bergville purification works already under water, the risk of a further rising Tugela River as Spioenkop Dam nears 100% full has emergency services in the area preparing for the worst.

Ladysmith Public Safety are also closely monitoring streams and spruits in the town, as they are all steadily rising.

There is a strong likelihood that the spruit by Centenary Bridge, Protea Bridge and Bellspruit may rise over road level.

Public Safety are keeping a close eye on the levels and should flooding occur, motorists will be diverted onto alternative routes.

According to an uThukela spokesperson, uThukela District Municipality has learned that the raw water pumps and pump house at Bergville plant are flooded and water supply will be interrupted. The cause of that is the high level of water from the uThukela River, so nothing can be done at the moment until the river level drops.

According to uThukela: We will ensure that the town gets water and those areas that can be accessible, and we will also monitor the situation and keep the public informed about the proceedings.

As far as Ladysmith is concerned, we are still pumping at present, but we are also waiting for the information from our engineers, who went to check out the situation in Spioenkop. We will keep you updated.
