BARRY HERTZOG – The devastating floods of last week have had far-reaching consequences.
Apart from the displaced families and washed-out homes, the torrential rains and flooding rivers also had a disastrous effect on several roads.
Since the floods, certain streets have become effectively un-driveable.
Roads which suffered heavy damages include Drakensberg Drive near the old Monte Vista Casino, Kirkland Street near the Bird Street intersection and the intersection of the R34 Memel Road and Allen Street.
Other roads have become even more rutted since the heavy rainfall.
Municipal workers have scrambled to repair the numerous roads damaged during the floods, which prompted Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi to state during a press briefing last week that the situation was disturbing.
At the same meeting, he shed some light on the situation.
“The municipality has budgeted to reseal and repair roads, but in view of the floods, it’s not enough. It wasn’t enough before the floods, so it has become an emergency.”
Cllr Nkosi said had it been any worse, the municipality would have had to reallocate funds to ensure maintenance could go ahead.
As it was, the municipality had to work within constraints of the budget.
“The budget is limited and the demands are unlimited,” he explained.
