HUTTEN HEIGHTS – Two open stormwater drains pose a threat to pedestrians.
In Kudu Avenue, opposite a play park, the cover of a manhole was reported missing in October 2016.
The municipality’s communication department claimed the problem had been resolved, although a resident denied it.
“The manhole at Kudu Avenue was replaced after it was reported, but motorists are persistently parking on top of it, hence it has broken again,” claimed the department.
The uncovered manhole in Kirkland Street is concealed by grass and almost invisible. The Newcastle Sun reported it on February 17, but it has not been repaired yet.
The communication department admitted the municipality was responsible for road fixtures such as manhole covers, but could not explain why the manhole covers were not repaired or replaced after they had been reported on February 9.
The communication department denied receiving any complaints regarding the open stormwater drain.
“Once a complaint is received or a missing manhole cover is identified by our clerk of works, who carries out regular inspections on all our roads, it is replaced immediately.”
“The municipality does consider all uncovered manholes as a threat, hence why we try to have a speedy response time to replace them. However, the municipality only has one clerk of works who does inspections on all our roads, Newcastle East and Newcastle West. We therefore also rely on the public to report all missing covers so we can attend to them as soon as possible,” the communications department concluded.
