Housing corruption deepens as another family finds themselves out on the street

The ongoing housing corruption saga in extension 20, Sibongile, is continuing to impact on the lives of innocent victims.
Nozipho Majozi and her family were summarily evicted last weekend from house number 4568 which they have rented since April 2016 from a Shabangu family to whom the Housing Steering Committee allocated the house.
Mzwakhe Sithebe, of the Endumeni Civic Association, who has fought a long battle to bring to book those who have ‘corrupted the list for their own ends’, believes Nozipho and her family were evicted as the owners are ‘nervous of a pending police investigation’.
Nozipho’s employer in Dundee traced the Shabangu family to ‘an address in a leafy suburb in Vryheid’. The family is believed to own at least two ‘luxury vehicles’.
However, Mr Sithebe told the Courier that according to the official housing list, the Shabangus had listed their address as 1280 Dlamini Street which was the home of a Mr Mbambo who has since died.

“Nozipho was supposed to have been allocated house 4528 as she is a deserving person. However, the list states that Nozipho could not be traced even though she has a job in Dundee and house 4528 was given to a Mandla Ngcobo.
There are many other anomalies where the housing allocation has been juggled to suit undeserving people who rent the homes out for around R1 200 a month which is illegal.”
Mr Sithebe said his committee had opened charges of fraud against the Housing Steering Committee in July last year. The investigation had been escalated to the Human Settlements Risk Management office and the elite Hawks police unit but up until now the ‘pace of the probe has been at a snail’s pace.’
“Take another example: house 4578 was allocated to one Zama Masimula which is now owned by MP Khoza whose last residential address was 1026 Mbatha Street where no one knows that person. Clearly, a lot more has to be done or we are going to see many more unfair evictions as experienced by Noziphio.” Any person paying rent for a RDP house is encouraged to call the hotline 0800 701 701.
