Residents dispute Lorne Street restoration

Among other concerns, safety was the most common one, as a pedestrian had previously slipped into a part of the pavement that has been left uncovered

Over the past few weeks Lorne Street residents together with business people raised their concerns regarding the poor conditions in the street.

They made mention of the refuse that was not collected, blocked drains, damaged storm water drain covers, uncovered pavements and more.

They further highlighted that this gives off a bad reflection for the business they run and tourists entering the town from the Old Main Road entrance.

In response Acting Municipal Manager Mrs Z Ndlela said the following:

“This drain was already cleaned and closed up even before publication of the photo, and the civil department is still waiting for parts in order to repair the drain.”

In response, a furious resident said: “Would we have resorted to publicising this matter if the drain was clean and closed up? “Why are parts being ordered if the drain was cleaned and closed up?”

One other businessman feels that covering the sidewalk should be made a priority in this case.

“I have called numerous times and the Acting Municipal Manager is never at the office, I would like to know why of all the concerns raised, the drain is set to be repaired?”

A businessman who would like to remain anonymous said: “I called to have this picture taken a week prior to its publication; therefore it puzzles me when it could have been cleaned and closed up.”

Among other concerns, safety was the most common one, as a pedestrian had previously slipped into a part of the pavement that has been left uncovered.

“If our local municipality took this matter seriously, they would have made a point of having an onsite meeting to resolve this matter,” added the businessman.
