Alfred Duma Local Municipality Deputy Mayor Thuli Hadebe and Chief Whip Cllr T Njapha, together with Ward 32 Cllr Mbhele, held a sod-turning ceremony at the Valkop Community Hall on Thursday (March 2).
The community gathered in numbers to witness the soil turning, which heralds the construction of a new bridge.
Cllr Mbhele related the background of the bridge, saying that the issue stems from a decade ago, as schoolchildren have to take off their shoes in order to pass through the river.
The situation becomes worse when there are floods and children are unable to cross the river, therefore missing school. Another issue is the fact that there is no easy access for vehicles and it is difficult for emergency vehicles to pass on the river if the river is full as a result of floods.
Deputy Mayor Hadebe introduced the company awarded to construct the bridge, KPA Civils (Pty) Ltd, with the project’s estimated budget being to the tune of R8 million.
“We issue a plea to the community to take care of the project by making sure they keep an eye on the site so that no one can steal the equipment to delay progress,” she said.
She also emphasised the job opportunities this project will create.
Community members showed great excitement and appreciation at the news of a new bridge, as this will mean a huge difference in their lives and the safety of schoolchildren. Ward councillor Mbhele closed the meeting by conveying his appreciation for the good turnout of the community.
