Former Bok puts rugby boys through their paces

Braam is on a five-year coaching contract at the school.

Former Springbok rugby legend, Braam van Straaten, put the various rugby teams from St Charles College, Pietermaritzburg, through a strenuous training camp at the Battlefields Country Lodge sports resort this weekend.
The St Charles coaches say the pristine environment makes for the ideal pre-season breakaway and serves to sharpen up the boys of all high school age groups before their first game next Tuesday.

Braam van Straaten makes his point loud and clear.

Rowan Irons of St Charles College, who co-ordinated the training camp, described the environment as pristine and ideal for a training session away from where the boys could be distracted.
“The facilities are superb, the weather fantastic and everyone is enjoying the training as we gear up for our first competitive game this weekend against St Andrews.

Concentration is vital in ensuring players are ready for the new rugby season.

Braam is on a five-year coaching contract at the school. He was capable of playing either at fly-half or centre, and represented the Springboks in 21 tests from 1999 to 2001, scoring 221 points.
He was born in Pretoria and made a relatively late start to professional rugby, making his debut for the Bulls in 1996 at the age of 24. Click on www.northernnatalcourier.co.za for more photos and a video of the Sevens action.
