Taking vasbyt to another level

ON the weekend of March 4 and 5, two groups of Vryheid’s mountain bikers participated in two amazing events.
Twelve riders took on the grueling Trans Drak that takes place on district and farm roads around Van Reenen’s pass: 208km with 3 100m climb. This event is renowned for its difficult route with adverse weather conditions and this year was probably the worst. The first 110km of the event was a ‘breeze’ with smooth district roads and perfect weather. But then, at 3pm, a huge storm with lightning broke loose with 80mm rain falling in one hour.
This made the farm-roads and district roads very muddy and treacherous for the riders for the remaining 100km. The river crossings were knee deep. A group of Vryheid riders, who stuck together and supported each other to the bitter end, were Patrick Friend, Pieter Muller, Wynand and Loumey Swanepoel, Paul Marques and Eugene Bosch. These riders came in at 4.30 Sunday morning. Taking 18h30m to complete the event and, like Patrick said, taking vasbyt to another level!
San Haywood and Zauco van den Berg finished the event in 11h52m, taking first place for a mixed team. Riaan Swanepoel finished in 11 hours and came in 9th overall. Well done to these exceptional ‘vasbyters’!
Another group of Vryheid’s riders took part in the Dumbe event at PaulPietersburg on Saturday, March 4, which is also a very difficult event: 40km and 750m climb. Coreen and Elize finished the event, coming in first and second. Well done to all who took part, including Marius van Eden, Elize van Eden, Coreen Scholtz, Bert Jan Willemse, Daneel van Dyk, Arno Swanepoel and Frederik Marx. Well done to all.
