Monira Moothi cut a lonely figure when she appeared in the Glencoe Magistrate’s Court this morning to apply for bail after she was charged with stabbing to death her husband on Sunday evening.
The 32-year-old mother of two – including a six-week-old baby – could not confirm a fixed address and Magistrate Cassim postponed the bail application to March 27 to allow her ‘time to speak to her family’.
The application was temporarily postponed to allow detectives a chance to ascertain her claim that her new fixed address was that of her sister’s home in Glencoe. Her two children are currently under her sister’s care.

However, when the matter resumed, the Prosecutor, Ms Mkhawanzi, who was opposing bail, said the claim could not be substantiated. She is to apply for legal aid.
Ms Moothi was then led back into the holding cells. Her co-accused, Afzal Hassan (43), to whom she is related, who appeared yesterday, will also appear on March 27. He is currently being held in Ladysmith Prison.
Both are accused of stabbing to death Ms Moothi’s husband, Daniel Pires (34), after a domestic dispute in the Schroeder’s Road home where they were living at the time. A pair of scissors was used to stab Mr Pires in the neck and head.
