No to racism, yes to human rights: Farouk loves the country but not the crime
Originally from Gujarat in India, Farouk came to South Africa ten years ago and has made a life for himself here
He came with the intent of staying for one or two years, but a decade later, Farouk Dhudhat is still loving the country he now calls home.
Originally from Gujarat in India, Farouk came to South Africa ten years ago, only planning to stay for a few years.
He spent three years running a cellphone shop in Rylands, Cape Town before moving to Queenstown in the Eastern Cape.
It was here that he found love and got married. He now is the proud father to two daughters. He spent another three years in the Eastern Cape before relocating to Dundee, where he has been since.
Farouk runs a cellphone shop in the Shoprite Centre and is a star cricket player for Paki Lions.
A resident of South Africa for ten years now, Farouk was very complimentary of the county but concerned about the crime rate.
“It’s a very beautiful country and the people are friendly but the crime is bad. It affects everyone, not just the foreigners, but if the locals aren’t safe, what chance do we have?”
Farouk added that one of the reasons he wanted to return to India was because of the crime rate in South Africa. “I haven’t seen my family in ten years, so I miss them. The only reason I would come back to South Africa is for the cricket, it’s better than the business.”
