Alfred Duma Local Municipality’s ‘Operation Sukuma Sakhe’, together with Cllr Gwala (Ward 30) and Cllr Sbongile Kubheka, held a ‘Universal Test And Treat’ and ‘Teenage Pregnancy’ awareness campaign at the Egoqweni Community Hall on Thursday.
The HIV Officer / LAC Co-ordinator and others were there, along with various government departments. The event was held as part of an awareness campaign to advise the community on their well-being in terms of taking care of themselves and remaining knowledgeable about these departments and how they operate.
Miss Phumelele from Duduza Care Centre, under the Department of Health, spoke of CCMDD (Central Chronic Medicine Dispensing and Distribution) which is a new programme government has introduced for community members not to experience long queues if they are there to collect their chronic medication.
Another programme that was introduced is called UTT (Universal Test Treat). This programme is based on treatment that is given to people who are infected by HIV/Aids to receive their medication immediately.
SASSA spokesperson Mr Thomas made announcements with regards to reports of illegal activities perpetrated by companies who deduct pensioners’ monies without agreement between SASSA and the pensioner. He said that if such practices are taking place, the pensioner should report the case immediately to SASSA offices.
SACTWU representative Miss Khumalo encouraged males to circumcise. From LGTBI (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex), Miss Gabi spoke of the criticism and abuse of lesbians and gays, as they are not accepted in rural communities. She encouraged communities to refrain from this discrimination and instead accept them as equal members of the community.
Cllr Sbongile Kubheka, who was representing the Alfred Duma Local Municipality deputy mayor, encouraged young people to love education and strive to succeed in everything they do in order to become successful in life.
