GHANDI PARK – There’s trouble growing steadily on Henrietta Street.
Residents in the area have complained of a greatly overgrown property in close proximity to a temple, a school and various residences.
The grass on this property has reportedly not been cut for more than two years.
One resident had similar complaints in previous articles of the Newcastle Advertiser, and said the overgrowth on the neighbouring yard was cut away initially.
Poles were sunk and a gate was installed.
But by mid-December this year, the grass was again out of control and his attempts to get municipal intervention went from pillar to post, to no avail.
“I eventually got through to an official, who said the municipality can’t do anything because of issues with the by-laws. My concern is that they taken the money but do nothing to earn it.”
Municipal officials did conduct a site inspection, the resident added, but the problem seemed to come in when the property owner was sought.
After the inspection, he noticed all progress had stopped.
“It’s a serious problem – I’ve had two venomous snakes in the house, the rats are running riot and there are lots of mosquitoes because it’s damp. I hear people in the bushes at night, and I’m not sure if they are vagrants or criminals.”
The resident’s vehicle was broken into twice and his gate motor stolen.
His chief concern is thus the crime aspect, although the embarrassment of living in such close proximity to the overgrowth is casting a lengthy shadow upon his reputation.
According to a source, the matter was since reported to the Health Services Department for investigation, and the property owner was served with an official notice.
