A bumpy ride as you grind your teeth, hoping not to have any damage done to your vehicle. Then, there it is, the sewer pond of muck and garbage as you make your way to JDR Metals in Phillip Street. The stench that hangs in the air will make you sick to your stomach with just one whiff.
“This is what my workers and I have had to put up with for the past few months on our way to work every single day. It is pathetic.
“How much more unpleasant must it be to for my clients, some who enter by foot,” said the owner of JDR Metals.
The toxic environment has frustrated surrounding business people. They say that the service they are receiving from the municipality ‘stinks’.
The stream, which is a health hazard, seems to be leaking from a concrete sewerage pipe. The owner of JDR Metals pointed out that with the height of the grass, the area previously used as a temporary taxi rank, is on its way to becoming a crime hotspot.
“I have called the municipality, and uThukela thousand times, if not more and I still have to put up with this. I am fed up.”
A group of affected business owners held a meeting recently and have decided to jointly put up a gate as they feel that the municipality is ‘neglecting’ the problem. They want urgent steps taken for the mess to be cleaned up.
