On Friday, uThukela District Municipality Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko – accompanied by Cllr BS Dladla of KwaMthaniya Ward 21 and Cllr SA Mvelase of Ward 22 in Nhlawe – introduced the contractor to install water pipes in the above-mentioned areas outside Weenen under Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality.
The contractors will be undertaking the construction of a water project. When completed, the scheme is expected to serve approximately 270 households in KwaMthaniya and 320 households in Nhlawe.
The project is also expected to create about 66 temporary job opportunities for the locals.
Awarded to two private companies, Shula Construction and Hydrotech Infrastructure respectively, each project is envisaged to take about 12 months to complete. The source of funding itself is the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), which has been made available by the Department of CoGTA.

It is estimated that about R23 million will be injected into the project on its completion at KwaMthaniya and over R25 million at Nhlawe. This was done in an attempt to tackle water scarcity in these areas, which has been an issue for quite some time.
“We are bringing this water project here in KwaMthaniya and Nhlawe because it is our aim to bring hygienic and drinkable water to the community, as it is our duty to make sure that the community receives their basic needs.
“As we are bringing the water project here, we also aim to bring potable water to the community and today we are here to introduce contractors which are ready to commence work soon. The project will also create temporary jobs for the locals,” said the mayor. He further urged the community to work hand-in-hand with the service provider to get the job done in time.
Cllr Dladla and community members of KwaMthaniya were grateful that the district has come to the rescue of the people. He said the construction of a water reservoir and infrastructure is very important to address water issues in the area.
The community thanked the mayor for everything uThukela does to develop their municipality, including the people residing within its boundaries. “Even though we witness development in our area, it is not enough until it reaches all the communities,” said Cllr Dladla.
The mayor then reminded the audience that working together as a community is vital to bring service delivery to the people. He told them that water works take a long of time to complete, so people need to be patient. He also urged people to report any problems they encounter with water tankers in the area and illegal connections.
Residents are happy that they will now have water piped into their yards.
