BREAKING NEWS: Workers burn tyres for higher wages at School of Industries (VIDEO)

A representative from NEHAWU claimed the strike would continue until their demands were met.

A pillar of smoke darkens the entrance to Newcastle School of Industries, Newcastle Secure Centre and Newcastle Youth and Child Care Facility, as three tyres burn.

The fire blazes, and social workers and child youth care workers chant as they strike for an increase in their salaries.

The strike began on March 27, when protesters claimed their salaries needed to be adjusted from Level 4 to Level 7. The necessity of the salary adjustment was justified by strikers, who claimed their work often put them at risk, as the youth they dealt with were often on trial for crime

When the strike began, Spokesperson for KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development, Ncumisa Ndelu said the Department of Social Development were under negotiations with the protesters to find a resolution. However, none seems to have been found.

“The department has refused our demands, which is why we are showing the public that we will not work unless there is money,” claimed a representative from National Education Health and Allied Worker’s Union (NEHAWU).

Police and the Fire Department are currently at the scene to ensure the protest does not escalate.
