Ladysmith Secondary School’s (Lasec) Youth Citizens Action Programme (YCAP) aims at helping to save water and clean up the community. The programme sees 10 learners from the school, both boys and girls, taking action in remedying problems faced in the school and surrounding community, such as litter and water wastage.
At the school fun day on Thursday, they spoke to the learners on how they are trying to help the litter problem and also save water by creating awareness and getting their school involved.
At the school already, the YCAP team has a recycle corner for plastic, tin cans, cardboard, paper and plastic bottles.
They will take the waste they have collected to the Why Waste company and the money raised will be used at the school’s discretion to help out needy learners.

They will also use the money for water tanks at the school for clean and grey water, which will be used to water the gardens and for the flushing of toilets.
They will also store water for when their water supply is shut down at the school. With this, the YCAP learners say they will be saving their school money.
The YCAP programme, according to the learners, has a lack of funding and support at this time. Without this, they cannot go forward with their objectives, hence they are looking for sponsors and funding. They are looking for bins and also water tanks they can use to store water.
They want their programme to succeed, and eventually build a school hall and a computer room for the school. They say all the help they can get in the form of sponsorship will be much appreciated.
