Ward 8 and 9 residents protest
“How will they know our grievances if they do not come to us?”
The community members of wards 8 and 9 took to the streets today to voice their dissatisfaction with the service delivery in their areas.
According to these Vryheiders, they have not had formal meetings with their ward councillors since after the elections.
“How will they know our grievances if they do not come to us?” asked these community members.
A memorandum was handed over to Acting Director of Corporate Services, Sthembiso Mthembu.
Among other issues, they complained about corruption surrounding the issuing of houses in Bhekuzulu Ext. 16 (commonly known as Sasko).
The community members also complained that not enough was being done to aid them through the drought that AbaQulusi endured.
“The municipality is failing to deliver and supply water to the currently supplied Jojo tanks,” read the memorandum.
Other issues these community members brought forward were political favouritism and nepotism as well as that of a family being thrown out of their home by a farmer near the Stilwater KwaMehlemamba area.
The farmer is said to have destroyed this family’s home and has since refused them access to the property to obtain their belongings.
These community members said that they would be giving the municipality seven working days to respond. Should the municipality fail to respond, the community said that it would embark on a rolling mass protest and would render AbaQulusi Municipality ungovernable.
