A decade after her husband was shot dead, Shirley Burjam is still seeking answers

Ten years after her husband was gunned down, Shirley Bujram has not stopped her desire to finally put the pain to bed.
However, a decade later, she claims that she still has no answers even though Bongani Shangase and Siyabonga Nukani were jailed for their role in the murder of Shirley’s husband, Grishen, a trade unionist, who was gunned down in Sibongile in June 2007.
Former Endumeni Mayor, Thandeka Nukani, who is Siyabonga’s aunt, has since been charged with conspiracy to commit murder after it was alleged that she tried to poison Siyabonga after he turned State witness against her. Siyabonga is serving his jail sentence in Waterval Prison and the State alleges she tried to have him poisoned.
She denies this.
She was to appear in Court again last month in Newcastle but the case was again postponed after it was heard that the investigating officer had no transport to bring a witness to court.
“This case is going in the same direction as my husband’s murder case. The original hitman was in court but the police lost track of him when he needed to testify.”
“This is completely shocking and unacceptable as the State has plenty of vehicles.
“Our family has again been left bitter and traumatised after it was ruled that the case will be only heard now on July 6,” Shirley told the Courier.
“This case is going in the same direction as my husband’s murder case. The original hitman was in court but the police lost track of him when he needed to testify.
“Thandeka Nukani was given the benefit of the doubt because of the police losing the state witness.
“We are back to square one again.”
Shirley said the family’s breadwinner was taken away from them and she added that she now has no option but to turn to the Minister of Justice to voice her dissatisfaction.

The Endumeni Civic Association has served court papers on the Endumeni Municipality, KZN Human Settlement Department and the National Department of Human Settlements.
It is alleged that many of the houses have been allocated to family members of municipal officials, relatives of the housing committee and other politically connected beneficiaries at the expense of those who have been left off the housing list.
