Municipality says it ‘takes pride in maintaining cemeteries’
A visit to the Keate Street cemetery on Monday showed signs that the grass had been recently cut but not removed
The state of the Keate Street cemetery was highlighted recently when a mother visited her son’s grave and was dismayed at what she found.
Evidence of drug use, litter and alcohol were strewn all over the cemetery, which was scorned on by Sonja Vorster-Bezuidenhout who called on Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality to take their responsibility of maintaining public areas seriously.
“It is clear that the municipality has taken no interest whatsoever in any form of upkeep of the final resting place for our loved ones. It is further not safe to visit the cemetery as it seems to be a walk through for vagrants and drug users,” said Mrs Vorster-Bezuidenhout.
Responding to the resident’s concerns, Acting Municipal Manager Mrs Ndlela said that the municipality ‘takes pride in maintaining the cemeteries.’
“The grass has been cut and the cemetery is cleaned on a weekly basis. The municipality does not interfere with private belongings. We also apologise for the bench that was broken,” she said.
