UThukela District Municipality, last Tuesday, officially launched its interactive tourism website during an event that was held in Ladysmith.
The website seeks to promote the natural and cultural diversity of the region and at the same time encourage tourism growth as well. The website took over six month to develop and redesign.
The whole project was undertaken by a private IT specialist called ESRI South Africa. It is a common belief that a well-designed and maintained website is very important for any tourism industry to strive.
Through the launch of this highly interactive website, uThukela District believes that a lot of interactive activities will be captured.
Speaking at the launch, uThukela District Municipality Deputy Mayor Cllr Nombali Sibiya said the website also aims to assimilate various data sources into a single location or portal, allowing easy access for end users.

“We are very excited about the launch of such a website today. While the site offers rich content already including a number of mouth-watering screenshots, it is a work in progress and we will certainly continually improve it,” said Cllr Sibiya.
The website consists of two parts, which is the landing page and an interactive map. UThukela District has placed increased importance on the diversification of the economy, particularly through the development of the tourism sector and initiatives such as this, are steps towards enhanced product positioning and competitiveness for destination in the regional and international marketplace.
“Our website will therefore be updated with any new information that becomes available and the tourism officers of the district together with those of the local municipalities will try to ensure that all the information provided is correct and relevant for public consumption,” concluded the Deputy Mayor.
Tourism sectors encouraged uThukela District to work closely with their tour operators and congratulated the district for the launch of such a website.
General Manager for Social and Economic Services Department Mr Zama Khuzwayo told the audience that the municipality will soon be appointing tourism ambassadors to market tourism in the district.
And as part of maximising tourism attraction, the district is currently busy trying to establish the film office aimed at ensuring tourist site that exists can be used by film makers locally and abroad.
