Water protest sparks looting in Tugela Ferry

Shops have been looted and businesses closed

The situation in Tugela Ferry is deteriorating with large rocks blocking the main road and some shops have reported to have been looted.

All businesses are closed in the town. It is understood that residents are angry because of the lack of water services in the area which is the competency of the Umzinyathi District Municipality.

Motorists had their cars stoned this morning with one farmer having to seek refuge at the Tugela Ferry police station after two of his vehicle’s windows were smashed.  Witnesses said currently no vehicles can access the town as the road is blocked from both sides by boulders. Many school children could not attend school as their transport could not travel to their schools.

Police have been deployed to the area.
