Why the DA won’t accept Cllr Maphisa as mayor
The IFP seems to have since changed its mind about the decision and there are currently rumours that the recently elected deputy mayor, Cllr Jerry Sibiya, may now be put in the mayoral position.
THE Democratic Alliance has set the record straight on why it was not going to stand by the IFP’s decision to elect Cllr Mncedisi Maphisa as the new mayor of AbaQulusi.
According to the DA’s constituency chairperson for Zululand, Cllr Sibusiso Nkosi, the party had asked the IFP to justify why it had chosen Cllr Maphisa out of all the councillors it has.
“To us, it did not make sense and we were thus unwilling to vote for this person without being given proper record of his competency for the position,” said Cllr Nkosi.

The IFP seems to have since changed its mind about the decision and there are currently rumours that the recently elected deputy mayor, Cllr Jerry Sibiya, may now be put in the mayoral position.
Cllr Nkosi made it clear that as the DA, they would only stand by the IFP if they were making reasonable decisions as they do not want to have their name dragged in the mud.
“The most critical matter at the moment is that of the mayoral position as we cannot run a municipality without a mayor. We have given them a 10 day ultimatum to sort their issue out and bring forth a new mayor,” said Cllr Nkosi.
The DA has also given AbaQulusi municipality 10 days to sort out the issues of ‘acting’ directors of the different departments.
“This matter needs to be sorted out as quickly as possible as we do not want it to hinder the people’s service delivery. We are happy to confirm that short-listings have already begun,” said Cllr Nkosi.
