Veld fires block out sun, scorch the earth

Wild veld fires blocked out the sun yesterday afternoon and the smelly of fires hung heavy over the town.  The tinder dry grass went up in flames around Mpati hill and just a stone’s throw from houses on Smith Street.

It is not clear if the Fire Brigade was sent in but there was no sign of authority while the Courier was there.

The flames were fanned by a chilly wind.
