Teachers’ Union alleges widescale corruption among Umzinyathi District education employees

The Teachers’ Union, SADTU, has made allegations of corruption and fraud made by employees in the Umzinyathi Education District.
Provincial Secretary, Nomarashiya Caluza , said in a statement the Union has always argued that the Department does have enough money to address the backlog in the provision of resources to enhance quality teaching and learning.
“Now we discover that employees lie easily with travelling claims they are not entitled to. But the worse form of corruption is in the pension section when a person’s whose name we have is defrauding the State by adding unknown beneficiaries when families of deceased employees are making pension claim.
“It shocked us to learn that the District manager was aware of the scam but nothing is done to the employee except for redeploying the employee to another section in the same district. All this confirms what SADTU has always been raising that the employee relations is very selective in dealing with disciplinary issues wherein the focus is on school based educators who are easily suspended even where there is no ground for that. SADTU demands that action be taken against this employee and investigation be done to root out corruption and fraud in the district. SADTU will provide names of the employees.”
The KZN Education Department has been contacted for comment and their response will be published when received.
