Ladysmith municipal workers burn tyres in protest

The protesters blocked off the gates, saying that nobody will get in until officials come to resolve the matter

Municipal workers at the Department of Hygiene, Engineering & Services are furious with department officials and burned tyres outside the offices today (July 5) as part of a protest action.

The protest stems from internal posts within the department, claiming that more people from outside the municipality are being hired than ones who are already working there.

“13 posts for each department were issued, of which all of them were internal. The reason we took to protesting is because we saw more people from outside being hired. This really makes us angry and confused as to why it is called internal if they would hire people from outside,” said municipal worker Bongani Mtshali.

The protesters also have other issues, such as the out-sourcing of jobs and disabled people not being hired.
