Electricity for AbaQulusi’s rural areas
Shoba, Engagwini (Ehlanzeni, KwaDende), Esihlengeni and Zwathi residents will soon have electricity in their homes.
DESPITE the challenges it is facing, service delivery remains the main priority for AbaQulusi Municipality.
This was the impression that was given by council members who travelled to different wards last week to deliver the great news of electricity connections at some of the rural parts of AbaQulusi.
The Speaker, Michael Khumalo, and the Deputy Mayor, Jerry Sibiya, accompanied by members of council, visited the Shoba, Engagwini (Ehlanzeni, KwaDende), Esihlengeni and Zwathi areas to introduce the communities to the contractors who will be working in their areas to install electricity into their homes.

Addressing members of these communities, the speaker reminded the people of the importance of working hand-in-hand with the municipality and contractors in order to ensure that things move along smoothly and with no delays.
“We are all aware of the fact that not all members of the community will get jobs from these projects. Let us, however, try to ensure that the people who do receive this temporary employment opportunity are the ones who need it most,” said the speaker.
The Deputy Mayor pleaded with members of the public to keep politics out of these projects.

“As a municipality we are asking that community members refrain from involving politics in things that are meant to move the community forward. We do not want any political arguments. You are getting electricity from AbaQulusi municipality, not because of a specific party,” he said.
In light of recent violent attacks against women, the speaker also spoke of how AbaQulusi Municipality stood against the abuse of women.
“As men, we are protectors and should thus work on protecting our women and children instead of making them live in fear,” he said.
Members of the communities were very pleased with the news that they would finally have electricity in their homes.
“We are highly grateful to AbaQulusi municipality. In all the time that we have lived here we have never been visited by municipal officials,” said a community member from the KwaDende area.
Contractors are set to start working soon. Spirits are very high and excitement is in the air in these communities.
