Gas cookers bring relief to Dannhauser elderly

About 200 elderly residents in Dannhauser have received gas cookers and cylinders to help them cope with ongoing electricity outages.

About 200 elderly residents in Ward 2 received the cookers and gas cylinders during a handover led by Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe, accompanied by Deputy Minister Phumzile Sinclaire Mgcina.

The initiative comes as Dannhauser has been hard-hit by Eskom power outages, with some areas reportedly going for almost a week without electricity.

Alternative energy for households

The programme, implemented in partnership with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources and Dannhauser Local Municipality, aims to provide vulnerable residents with an alternative energy source for cooking and other household needs.

Mantashe said government programmes should reach communities and have a tangible impact on people’s daily lives, particularly those most vulnerable and in need of support.

Deputy Minister Mgcina engaged with residents and assisted with the distribution of the gas cookers and cylinders.

The handover was attended by Dannhauser Mayor Bongani Radebe, Ward 2 Councillor M Kunene, municipal councillors, directors, officials and community members.

Mayor Radebe welcomed the minister, deputy minister and departmental delegation to Dannhauser and thanked them for bringing the initiative directly to the community.
