In recognition of the effect that Ms Mkhabela is having on the education in the region, the partners in the teacher training courses (Treverton, Environment Learning and N3TC) presented her with a Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Achievement in Education

When Antonia Tholakele Mkhabela attended a teacher training course held at Treverton Schools in 2012, she had no idea what personal development and professional growth path she was on. Ms Mkhabela, who teachers at Shae O’Conner School in Nottingham Road, attended the pilot Teaching Biodiversity (grade 10 -12, Life Science) course in 2012.

During the course it became obvious that the other teachers were drawing on Ms Mkhabela’s strength and understanding. Teachers worked through the content knowledge, pedagogical and assessment practices presented at the course, while completing a portfolio of evidence of their teaching.

The facilitators from Rhodes University and Treverton noticed Ms Mkhabela’s potential and suggested she apply to complete her Masters Degree with the Department of Education at Rhodes University. Ms Mkhabela was not only accepted (one of around 30 out of 120 applicants) but she also received a bursary generously supplied by N3TC.

Despite taking on the role of Acting Headmaster at her school for a year, Ms Mkhabela stuck to her guns.

She said: “If others can see the potential in me then I must not disappoint them.” After graduating in April 2017, Ms Mkhabela commented: “Never did I think I would be able to achieve this level of education. I am very grateful for those who assisted me to achieve this significant achievement.”

Her thesis showed that teachers did not understand the Higher Order Thinking, which is an integral part of the curriculum.
This was a component during the course in 2012. Now she is assisting other teachers in her circuit to understand how to adapt their teaching practices to assist with the development this component, such as critical thinking.
