Fires ravage tinder-dry veld
'More should be done to ensure that the grass in open fields in residential areas is kept short'

The Endumeni Fire Brigade was out in force last night to ensure that a veld fire that at one stage threatened homes near the airfield was brought under control.
Fanned by a light dry wind, the fire started off Louis Steenkamp Street and spread through the open veld adjacent to Victoria and Tandy Streets. Firemen back-burned the veld in a bid to save their water reserves and in that way the ‘fire consumed itself’.
Residents called on the municipality to ensure the grass in open fields is cut before the onset of winter to ensure that out of control veld fires do not threaten homes.
