Former mayor must pay back R57K

The amount stipulated includes the difference in salary between the mayor and a member of the executive committee, the mayor’s cell-phone allowance, and use of the mayoral vehicle.

R57 024.40 is the total amount that former mayor, Martin Mtshali, will have to pay back to the municipality for mayoral benefits he continued to receive after he resigned from the position on April 18.

This figure was presented in the council agenda for a meeting that took place on Tuesday.

According to a report by Chief Financial Officer, Haroon Mohamed, the municipality was advised by Cogta (the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs) that all benefits to the mayor should have been stopped on the day of his resignation.
